About our weaver
Hand weaver Sirko Galz works in a small workshop in the heart of the Bavarian town of Burglengenfeld. The building used to house the town's first pharmacy, but since 2013 it has been home to an ever-growing number of looms.
This craft was not planned as a profession. Sirko Galz studied ecology and worked in this field for nine years. But his interest in craftsmanship and probably also his genes – one of his grandmothers had started learning at a weaving school – led him to become more and more involved with the subject and to apply it in practice. His fascination with the technology behind the looms also contributed to his decision to run an active craft business since 2012.
Handcrafted textile production stands in stark contrast to our fast-paced world. Few other crafts require as much time and effort as weaving. At the same time, however, there is nothing more fulfilling than watching products slowly take shape and imbuing them with a piece of your personality.
Sirko Galz specialised in producing relatively fine fabrics at a very early stage. The somewhat coarse, simple fabrics often associated with hand weaving were never what he wanted to make. He does not produce the typical white warps combined with coloured wefts, which always result in a pastel overall impression. The more sophisticated the weaving technique and the patterns, the more interesting they are for him. As a result, his textiles have developed their own unique appearance in recent years.
With the purchase of our first Jacquard loom in 2015, we took another step towards creating unique textiles. This weaving technique has almost disappeared in Central Europe. The recommissioning of these complicated looms opens a window back in time. At the same time, the patterns used and a special dyeing technique give the fabrics a modern feel.
