About our textiles
Our manufactory feels less connected to the artistic-creative field than is the case with most hobby craftsmen. Our focus is rather on preserving and continuing effective textile production by hand, as was the norm before industrialisation. There is no denying that handmade fabrics have subtle qualitative differences compared to machine-produced textiles. We want to make this difference accessible to an interested and appreciative clientele with our products. In doing so, we not only create material rarities, but also contribute to the preservation of textile culture and the craftsmanship of textile production in Europe.
Jacquard hand weaving
Jacquard hand weaving is a highly complex craft that is now only practised by a very small number of companies in Europe and differs significantly from conventional hand weaving in many respects.
While simple hand weaving often uses traditional patterns, Jacquard weaving uses its own pattern designs. Special knowledge is required to create and implement these patterns in the fabric, resulting in a series of steps that do not occur in normal hand weaving.
Due to the properties of the fabric, hand Jacquard weaving uses much finer yarns than is usually the case. This is the only way to create attractive fabrics.
An understanding of the complicated mechanics of the loom, which is essential for error-free operation, is another difference that should not be underestimated.
We are delighted to be able to carry on this branch of hand weaving into the future and to give our customers access to this craftsmanship.
Yarns
We work almost exclusively with high-quality natural plant and animal fibres, mainly silk, merino wool, cotton and linen. The considerable time required to produce handmade textiles means that no compromises can be made here. Ultimately, however, this results in our fabrics having a particularly long service life.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain these yarns in the required fineness and quality, as suppliers are focusing almost entirely on the needs of hobby weavers.
However, over time we have identified a number of reliable spinning mills and dealers across half of Europe with whom we now work.
Dyes
We dye many of our yarns directly in our workshop. We mostly use synthetic dyes for this. However, these have the disadvantage that, unlike natural dyes, they do not appear as vibrant. For our silk scarves, we have therefore developed our own dyeing method, in which several colours are combined to achieve a special depth of colour that comes very close to that of natural dyes.
For utility textiles, we use industrially dyed yarns, as they can be washed at higher temperatures. But here too, we combine several shades to create gradients and thus produce iridescent effects.
Working method
Even though our focus is on efficient textile production by hand, our capacity is naturally limited.
Our home textiles are produced in small batches in five harmonious colour combinations. We manufacture rolls with a total length of 25 or 50 metres, which are then processed into finished products. However, we do not lose sight of individual customisation. Table runners or cushions, for example, can be adjusted in size on request.
We produce our silk scarves as individual pieces. There are six scarves on each warp, but they are all made with different patterns and therefore differ significantly from one another.
For our valued customers, we work individually on commission with desired colours and even our own patterns. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
